The ring around the ignition energises the chip and reads its identity; if the number is not on the vehicle's approved list, it may crank and immediately die, or refuse to crank at all. Remote-head key

The blade and the remote buttons combined into one moulded unit. Two systems in one shell: the immobiliser chip that permits starting, and the radio that locks and unlocks. Either half can fail while the other keeps working.

Proximity fob, push-to-start

The vehicle senses the fob inside the cabin and the button does the rest. Most of these hide a thin emergency blade inside the fob body, and a matching hidden keyhole on the driver's door, often under a plastic cap on the handle. Laser-cut or sidewinder blades

Instead of teeth along the edge, a wavy channel is milled into the flat of the blade. They need a different cutting machine than a standard key, which is one reason a hardware-counter kiosk sends you away and a locksmith does not.

One working key versus all keys lost

When a key still exists and still starts the car, adding another is comparatively simple work: cut a fresh blade to the correct code, then add the new chip to the list the vehicle already accepts. The car is co-operating, and it usually goes quickly.

All keys lost is origination, and it is a genuinely different procedure. There is nothing to copy, so the cuts have to come from the vehicle's own key code or from decoding a lock cylinder by hand. Then the immobiliser has to be told to accept a key it has never seen, which on many manufacturers means putting the module into a learn state — and on a number of makes, that state opens only after a built-in security delay measured in minutes. That wait is designed into the car. No tool skips it, and any shop claiming otherwise for those platforms is telling you a story. These produce two different keys and people rarely realise it. Copying traces the key you hand over, including a decade of wear — every rounded shoulder and shallow cut gets faithfully reproduced. The copy is born as worn as the original, and now you own two mediocre keys instead of one. That is the real reason a fresh spare sometimes feels sticky from the first day.

Cutting to code ignores the old key entirely and machines the blade from the depth and spacing data the manufacturer assigned to that vehicle. The result is a key at factory specification, which frequently turns more smoothly than the original you have been using for years. When we can obtain the code, that is the way we prefer to make a replacement car key.

Fob programming: two different jobs sharing one name

"Programming" gets used for two unrelated operations. One is the radio side — pairing the buttons so lock, unlock, trunk and panic reach the vehicle. The other is the immobiliser side — enrolling the transponder identity so the engine is permitted to run. A fob can chirp the doors from across a parking lot and still be completely unable to start the car, and that is not a contradiction; it is two systems in one housing.

Before assuming a fob has failed, rule out the cheap causes. A tired coin cell shortens range long before it dies outright, so a fob that only works from two feet away is usually a battery, not a fault. A fob can also drift out of sync after the cell is changed or after the vehicle battery is disconnected, which is a re-pair, not a replacement. And if the fob is genuinely dead, most push-to-start vehicles have a documented backup: hold the fob against a specific spot on the steering column or the start button itself, where a short-range coil can read the chip without any battery in the fob at all. The key that turns hard, and the key that will not turn at all

An ignition that has started to fight you is giving notice. Inside the cylinder is a stack of small spring-loaded wafers that the key lifts to precise heights. Years of use wear both the wafers and the key, and the two wear together until one day the alignment is not close enough. The classic pattern is a key you have to jiggle, then wiggle, then hold at an angle — and then one morning it stops working entirely, or snaps. Not every stuck key is a worn cylinder, though, and two very common causes cost nothing to check. The first is the steering lock: if the wheel was under load when the engine shut off — parked on a slope, or the tyre resting against a kerb — the lock pin binds against the column and the key will not rotate. Apply firm pressure to the wheel left and right while turning the key gently, and it usually frees. The second is the shifter: many vehicles will not release the ignition unless the transmission is fully in Park, and "nearly in Park" is a real state. Nudge the shifter firmly into position and try again.

What not to do is force it. A key that needs muscle is a key about to break off in the cylinder, and a broken blade turns a modest repair into an extraction plus a replacement.

Broken key in the ignition or the door

If a blade has snapped off with part of it still in the lock, stop there. Do not try to glue the two halves together and pull — glue in a lock cylinder is a far worse problem than a broken key, and it converts a simple extraction into a cylinder replacement. Do not push the stub deeper hunting for grip. Do not force a spare key in behind the fragment; that usually drives it further in and can damage the wafers on the way.

Extraction uses thin hooked tools designed to catch the cut of the broken piece and draw it straight back out along its own path. When it comes out cleanly, the lock is generally unharmed. Keys almost always warn you first. Visible bending, a shiny thinned section near the shoulder, a hairline crack where the blade meets the head — any of those means the key is working on borrowed time, and it will choose the least convenient moment.

Why a slim jim on a modern door is a body-shop bill

The technique everyone has seen in a film comes from an era when the inside of a car door was a rod, a latch, and air. Today that cavity is crowded. There are lock actuator motors and their linkages, the window regulator with its cables or track, a wiring harness feeding the mirror and the window switch, a side-impact sensor whose whole job is to tell the airbag system when to fire, and a plastic moisture barrier keeping water off all of it. A flat steel bar raked blindly through that space finds those parts by feel.

The failure modes are expensive and often delayed. A window that will not go up two weeks later. A door that unlocks from the switch but not the handle. A mirror that stops adjusting. An airbag warning light that requires a scan tool and a dealer to clear. Frameless windows on coupes add another risk entirely, since the glass has to drop slightly when the door opens and the clips holding it are not built to be levered against.

The mobile approach is different in kind. A soft inflatable wedge opens a controlled gap at the top corner of the frame, spread across the whole edge rather than concentrated at one prying point, and a long-reach tool goes through that gap to press the unlock button or lift the handle — working in the cabin, not inside the door. Where a lock is pickable, picking it is cleaner still, because nothing is bent at all.

Motorcycles, powersports, RVs and trailers

Two-wheeled and off-road machines get skipped by a lot of automotive shops and they should not be. A motorcycle ignition can usually be decoded to produce a correct key even with nothing to copy, and on many bikes the seat lock or a luggage lock carries the same code and is far easier to reach. Trailers deserve an honest note. Coupler locks and cargo-door locks are frequently keyed alike across an entire product line, which is convenient when you own several and sobering when you realise how many identical keys exist in the world. Salt, sand and heat: what the coast does to car locks

Vehicles here live a harder life than the same vehicles inland, and locks show it first because they are the only precision mechanism on the outside of the car.

Sand is the quiet one. Fine grit rides in on wet hands and blows into an exposed door cylinder, and once inside it grinds against wafers and springs every time the key goes in. That is a large share of why an older door lock in a coastal town gets stiff years before the rest of the car looks tired. The maintenance is genuinely small. Use a lock lubricant meant for locks — a dry graphite or a PTFE-based product. Do not put general-purpose penetrating oil or household oil into a car lock; it attracts and holds exactly the grit you are trying to keep out, and turns a dusty cylinder into a paste-filled one. Work the key gently a few times after treating it, and if the key ever needs to be jiggled to turn, treat that as information rather than a habit to develop.

Everything above gets shorter and simpler when one working key exists. Origination from nothing takes longer, requires more equipment, and on many vehicles involves waiting on a built-in security timer. Duplicating an existing key involves none of that.

So the recommendation is boring and correct: get the second key made while the first one still works. Then keep it somewhere it will actually be reachable. Not in the glovebox of the car it opens. Not in a magnetic box stuck under the bumper, which is the first place anyone looks and the first place a highway will shake it loose.
